While I was out of town over the last few days, an alleged supergroup with the name Shrinebuilder got together in Los Angeles to make a record. The term supergroup is typically overused and overgenerous, and the concept tends to lead to disappointing results. This time it may be no different. But there's no doubt that the gathering of Scott Kelly, Wino, Al Cisneros, and Dale Crover in one studio is a special event.
Most of us will have to wait until the summer to hear the results. Based on the reports posted on his blog though, we know that Mr. Kelly is pleased with the experience, and that gives me great comfort. I saw him perform a solo acoustic show at the Relax Bar last year, and his sincerity made me feel fake. If I described this project as a supergroup in his presence, he might inflict damage, although the din he has created over the years has left him in a remarkably tranquil state. When he says that his music of choice on a deserted island would be Om and Hank Williams, it makes perfect sense. If you would like to spend more time with Mr. Kelly, I highly recommend checking out his show and the others being webcast at KBMT - Combat Radio Music. You will learn a lot - I know I do. A small donation to their cause would not hurt either.
