Doomtastic

According to the Urban Dictionary, "Doomtastic" has the following definition:
The mass media reaction to something so fantastically tragic, immediate and vast in scope that normal human emotional responses are insufficient, like the Gulf Oil Spill, or the Haitian earthquake, or 9/11.
Before we are investigated by Homeland Security, let us be clear - we don't think Friday night's show at the Echoplex will be anything like 9/11.  We're using "doomtastic" in the most positive way possible, something like:
The underground media reaction to something so fantastically tragic, immediate and vast in scope that normal human emotional responses are insufficient.

Last time YOB was in town, they played a half-full Roxy, although those in attendance were true disciples of the Portland band.  It was the last doom show in the Metal Matinee series.  Since then, the acts have played faster, and the fans have become younger and less hairy.  So be it.   There's a reason the even the New York Times has declared YOB "one of the best bands in North America."  Their new record, Atma, due out later this month, seems set to further enhance this reputation.  The new track, "Prepare The Gound" (which you can download from Stereogum), is Exhibit 1.  And along for the ride are labelmates DARK CASTLE, a Florida duo with a guitar tone that is undeniable, and interplay that makes the band sound twice as big.  Get there early for two of our local favorites:  ANCESTORS and ...OF THE HORIZON.
